Abstract

Objective To understand traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) health literacy levels and influencing factors among students of elementary schools and junior high schools in Macao, and to provide references for formulating relevant educational strategies. Methods From March to May 2024, the stratified cluster sampling was adopted to select 1,073 students of elementary schools and junior high schools in Macao for a questionnaire survey. Results The TCM health literacy levels among students of elementary schools and junior high schools in Macao was 16.8%, among which the levels of knowledge literacy, attitude literacy and behavior literacy were 42.2%, 35.8% and 9.9% respectively. Students who have received TCM treatment and believed that learning TCM knowledge was helpful, whose co-residents liked TCM culture and taught them TCM knowledge, and who often learned TCM knowledge at school, had relatively high level of TCM health literacy (all P<0.05). Conclusions There is still considerable room for improving the TCM health literacy levels among students of elementary schools and junior high schools in Macao. Factors such as students' experiences, value recognition, family attitudes and school education all have an impact on them.
